Chúng ta có thể thay đổi Port remote desktop cho Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, 2008, Windows7 thay vì sử dụng port 3389 theo mặc định. Việc thay đổi port sẽ tăng cao tính bảo mật và cá nhân hóa cho người dùng hơn. Để thay đổi port, chúng ta làm như sau:
1. Start Registry Editor. (Vào nút start, chọn Run rồi gõ lệnh Regedit
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: Click vào thư mục theo đường dẫn bên dưới:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber
3. On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then click Decimal. (Nhấn đúp chuột vào dòng PortNumber ở bên phải, sau đó kích chuột vào tùy chọn Decimal, nhập port cần thay đổi vào ô có hiển thị số 3389.
4. Type the new port number, and then click OK. (Nhấn OK)
5. Quit Registry Editor. (Đóng cửa sổ regedit lại)
6. Restart the computer. (Tiến hành khởi động lại máy) Lúc này, Port remote desktop đã được thay đổi, khi remote desktop, bạn cần nhập thêm port vào đằng sau IP của máy tính cần remote. Ví dụ: 27.118.20.250:6060 (6060 là port remote đã thay đổi)
